Who is Properly Organic?
Properly Organic is focused on research and education in the rural sector. We are developing new and intensive systems to grow food in a Properly Organic way.
Our driving factors are:
- economic sustainability
- environmental sustainability
- product quality
Buzzwords aside, all of this good stuff must be paid for so we start with 2 related micro-enterprises – Microgreens and Nursery. These were chosen as they have a rapid crop cycle time and are high value. Both use growhouses with attached sheds, so can be installed at the same time and share infrastructure.
Design staff for these enterprises will gain further hands-on experience shortly after the design is completed in order to improve their design.
Where is Properly Organic?
The property is based at 34 Lamberts Road, Merseylea in Tasmania. A pretty 26 acre property on the Mersey river chosen because it has floodplain river flats and higher ground to house the infrastructure.
When do we start?
We commence operations on Monday 2nd March 2020. I want to have my basic quota of staff in place by then to start the design and implementation phases.
Where are we going?
Initially, we start Microgreens and Nursery. Then we expand into an intensive climate controlled market garden (in ground) and intensive climate controlled organic hydroponics to catch those crops not grown in the soil.
Mushrooms and other crops are then integrated. Most of the decisions are to be made by our design staff, including the layout, systems and methods.
When we have proven our systems environmentally AND economically we will commence teaching so others may gain from our experience.
According to Wikipedia, “Biosecurity is a set of preventive measures designed to reduce the risk of transmission of infectious diseases in crops and livestock, quarantined pests, invasive alien species, and living modified organisms.”
We use bio security to ensure that our crops and therefore products are clean and healthy.
